Here’s how much it will cost to fly Cape Town-Johannesburg for Christmas

Those South Africans pondering a getaway this Christmas are urged to move fast and book their flight tickets.
That’s especially if you’re a Capetonian wanting to spend the festive season in Johannesburg – or a Joburger heading down to the Mother City.
Prices are ticking up as each day passes and the end of the year approaches.

cost
So how much does it cost to fly Cape Town and Johannesburg return on FlySafair over the Christmas / Boxing Day long weekend?
The South African investigated.
Christmas Day falls on Friday, 25 December, with Boxing Day on Saturday, 26 December.
Sadly, that means the latter is ‘lost’ as a public holiday.
However, it still leaves a three-day long weekend and if you move fast and put in for leave. You could even look to extend your stay by a day – or three.
The following assumptions were made:
- Depart on Thursday, 24 December from Cape Town International Airport
- Return on Sunday, 27 December from OR Tambo International Airport
- Select the cheapest possible flight option on each day, irrespective of departure time
- Select FlySafair’s most popular ‘standard’ flight option (1 x 20kg checked in bag)
Departure
Numerous departure flights from Cape Town International Airport on Thursday, 24 December are available at R2 316.30.
We selected the first available flight, departing at 05:45 and landing at 07:50 to help maximise the duration of your holiday.
Note: There are slightly cheaper seats available, but that would mean flying late at night.
Return trip
Once again, there are numerous flight options from OR Tambo International Airport back to the Mother City on Sunday, 27 December. The cheapest available is R2 871.79.
We selected the third last flight of the evening, departing at 18:35 and landing at 20:50 to again maximise your time away from home.
Total cost
The trip totals R5 188.09.
Perhaps not as bad as we expected for that peak time of year, although a word of caution, the flights are being booked up rapidly and the prices will almost certainly increase in the coming days and weeks.
For interest’s sake, the cheapest possible flight on FlySafair should you wish to travel from Johannesburg to Cape Town return, assuming the exact same above criteria, is R5 528.59.
That’s R340.50 more than the Cape Town to Johannesburg return option.
