Playback: The Law examined enforcement of laws on teacher sexual abuse

Translate

This Sunday’s edition of JoyNews’ The Law examined the enforcement of laws on teacher sexual abuse in the country.

The programme, hosted by Samson Anyenini, explored the legal framework for protecting students from sexual abuse, the accountability of teachers accused of such offences, and the steps required to ensure justice for victims.

Guests who joined the discussion are Marian Darlington, Executive Secretary and Head of Public Relations of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), and Lady Rev. Amesika Apprey of A-Partners@Law.

The programme comes amid growing public concern over the handling of sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, where the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has been interdicted pending investigations into allegations involving female students.

A JoyNews investigation by Manasseh Azure Awuni reported that complaints had allegedly been made to school management and education authorities months before the matter gained national attention, raising questions about institutional accountability and the protection of students.

JoyNews Research has also documented at least 44 cases involving teachers and school heads accused of sexually abusing students between January 2015 and October 2026, with more than half having no reported verdict or final sanction.

The discussion on The Law is expected to examine whether existing legal and administrative measures are sufficient to protect students, how complaints should be handled, and what steps are needed to ensure accountability when allegations of sexual abuse arise.
