Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was stopped by police after being spotted carrying a bow and arrows at a Northumberland beauty spot.

Bosnia-Herzegovina international Dedic, 24, was with a friend when he was stopped in a car after a concerned member of the public raised the alarm.

Reports say six police cars, external were dispatched, including armed police, and that Dedic and his companion were stopped about seven miles away from where they were originally spotted.

Police searched the car and seized the bow and arrows but were satisfied the two men were not a threat to the public.

BBC Sport has been told Dedic had no ill intention and has fully co-operated with police.

It is reported Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, 34, and former defender Paul Dummett, 35, arrived at the scene while police were speaking to Dedic.

It is understood the pair were in the area by chance and stopped to offer assistance.

The incident happened on Wednesday, two days after Dedic - who joined from Benfica for a fee in the region of £30m in August - had played in Newcastle's 1-0 home defeat by Everton.

Newcastle, who are 13th in the Premier League table on 11 points from nine games, have not commented.

Northumbria Police has released a statement and said enquiries are ongoing. The force has not named Dedic.

It said it received reports of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area.

"Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows," added the statement.

"At this stage, it is understood they were for recreational use and there was no threat to the public."

Newcastle are at Fulham on Saturday (15:00 GMT) before the November international break.

Dedic, who has featured in 10 league and cup games since joining Newcastle, has been named in the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad for Nations League matches away to Sweden on 14 November and at home to Romania on 17 November.
