From engineering to the pulpit: Prophet Jimmy marks 20 years in prophetic ministry

Translate

Before becoming known as Prophet Jimmy, Jimmy Alla-Mensah had built a professional career in network and security engineering, working with major organisations including Verizon and Lockheed Martin.

He had invested years in education, professional development and technical certifications, particularly in Cisco networking and security. It was a career path that offered professional fulfilment and a future he believed he could predict.

But in November 2006, he made a decision that would take his life in a direction he had not originally planned: entering prophetic ministry.

For the US-based Ghanaian prophet, the transition was not the result of a failed career or a lack of professional opportunities. Rather, he says, it followed a growing conviction that God had a different assignment for his life.

His spiritual journey had taken a significant turn on April 14, 2004, when he became born again. As his relationship with God developed, he says, so did his understanding of purpose.

By November 2006, he had stepped into prophetic ministry, leaving behind the relative familiarity of the engineering profession for a calling that presented an entirely different set of demands.

A different kind of preparation

The transition was particularly significant because, unlike his engineering career, prophetic ministry was not something he had spent years studying or preparing for professionally.

Prophet Jimmy says he entered ministry without formal prophetic training, prior ministry experience or the opportunity to understudy an experienced minister.

He therefore had to learn while carrying the responsibilities of ministry, depending on prayer, Scripture study, personal discipline and experience.

The experience, he says, taught him that having a calling does not automatically mean one has developed the maturity required to fulfil it.

“Anointing does not eliminate the need for wisdom. A calling does not remove the need for character. And spiritual gifts do not exempt anyone from learning,” he reflects.

His experience has also strengthened his appreciation for mentorship, accountability and sound biblical foundations.

Beyond professional fulfilment

The demands of ministry have also introduced him to challenges quite different from those he encountered in engineering.

Where his previous profession involved network infrastructure, security systems and technical solutions, ministry has brought him into direct contact with people dealing with sickness, broken relationships, financial difficulties, hopelessness and spiritual struggles.

He speaks of nights spent in prayer, long counselling hours, emotional exhaustion, disappointments and the responsibility of standing with people through difficult moments.

Yet, he says, the opportunity to see people regain hope and find strength has given the work a different kind of meaning.

“My engineering career gave me professional fulfillment. Ministry has given me the opportunity to participate in something that reaches deeply into the lives of people,” he says.

He acknowledges that the joy of serving comes with sacrifices, but says he remains grateful for the privilege of serving God and people.

Twenty years of a different journey

The journey has not been without difficult seasons. One particularly painful experience was watching a church he had worked hard to build decline from approximately 300 congregants to about 10.

The experience brought questions about failure, purpose and whether he had the strength to continue. It also taught him not to measure the success of a calling solely by attendance, popularity or public recognition.

Looking back, he says he would tell his younger self to remain humble, learn from mistakes, care for his health and protect his family. He would also remind himself that ministers are human beings who sometimes need encouragement and rest.

“Above all, remember that you are a human being before you are a minister,” he says.

As he prepares to mark 20 years in prophetic ministry, Prophet Jimmy describes the journey as one that has tested his faith, challenged his assumptions and reshaped his understanding of leadership and service.

The anniversary celebration is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, at House of Divine Glory Ministry International, 7895 Cessna Avenue, Suite B, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20879.

The celebration will reflect the themes of “20 Years of Grace,” “20 Years of Ministry” and “20 Years of God's Faithfulness.”

For Prophet Jimmy, the words of 1 Samuel 7:12 capture the significance of the milestone: “HITHERTO HATH THE LORD HELPED US.”
