3 Years Later, Agatha Christie’s 2-Part Murder Mystery Deserves a Second Chance

In July 2026, the Black Panther franchise announced its new lead with David Jonsson as Prince T'Challa II, the son of the late King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman). "Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join," Jonsson said at the time, per ScreenRant. But as the newest installment of Black Panther begins its production, many of Jonsson's previous projects deserve a second look.
Among them, of course, is the fan-favorite HBO series Industry, as well as the Agatha Christie murder-mystery Murder Is Easy. Released on December 27, 2023, Murder Is Easy is a BBC production that sees Jonsson as the main character who finds himself in the middle of a mind-bending mystery he can't help but investigate.
What Is 'Murder Is Easy' About?
Murder Is Easy, based on Christie's 1939 novel by the same name, follows a former Nigerian police officer named Luke Fitzwilliam (Jonsson) as he's traveling to a new job in London when he meets an elderly woman, Miss Pinkerton (Penelope Wilton), who claims a serial killer is operating in her quiet English village of Wychwood. At first, Fitzwilliam doesn't think much of it, and thinks the "accidents" she describes are indeed accidental rather than murder. But, when she herself is killed in a hit-and-run shortly after they meet, he decides to travel to Wychwood to look into what happened.
Under the guise of writing a book, Fitzwilliam gets to know all the eccentric characters in the small town, all while he investigates the string of suspicious deaths before anyone else dies. As the series goes on, he uncovers certain connections between all the incidents as he meddles in village politics, ticks off major members of the town and, possibly puts himself in harm’s way. "This village really is a place where murder is easy," he says in the trailer. In addition to Jonsson and Wilton, Murder Is Easy also stars Nimra Bucha, Mathew Baynton, Phoebe Licorish, Morfydd Clark, Kevin Mains and Douglas Henshall.
The Cast Shines in 'Murder Is Easy'
While Murder Is Easy didn't receive a warm critical reception, reaching a low 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews of the series have highlighted the cast's performances. In Maggie Boccella's review for Collider, she notes that Jonsson was certainly a scene-stealer. "He’s brilliant in spite of the heavy-handed exposition, with the right blend of charming and sharp that makes for a perfect amateur detective," Boccella wrote. "Fitzwilliam has the kind of attitude that makes you want to follow him everywhere, even though he isn’t a genius detective like Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot."
Other members of the cast also shine. "The entire cast makes up for where one of Christie’s drier and less interesting stories begins to falter," she wrote, adding that each member of the ensemble was a "unique flavor and quirkiness." Among the ensemble favorite was Baynton's unsettling local physician. "It’s a bit of a jumpscare for someone who grew up with Horrible Histories and Ghosts, but he seems to know exactly what works for him, channeling the best parts of other, more familiar characters into his recent work," Boccella wrote.
With all that said, as Marvel fans get ready to welcome Jonsson as the newest Black Panther, his lesser-known murder mystery Murder Is Easy is certainly an easy, quick binge that sees him as a leading man. With only two episodes, and an intriguing mystery at the center, the series is a delightful British crime thriller with the perfect amount of quirk and charm.
