3.3-magnitude earthquake hits Kinabatangan
KINABATANGAN: A weak earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit Kuamut here at 5.32am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
It said the epicentre of the quake was at latitude 5.1 degrees north and longitude 116.8 degrees east, at a depth of 118km, about 223km northwest of Tarakan, Indonesia, and 32km southwest of Tongod, Sabah.
The quake did not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia, it said.
Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Drawis said a team of six firefighters conducted patrols and monitoring in Kinabatangan at 6.26am following the report of the earthquake.
He said the team inspected the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) premises, Bukit Garam Library, Bukit Garam Point and other areas identified as being at risk.
"The inspection found no collapses or structural damage to any of the buildings checked," he said in a statement.
He said the team also advised local residents to remain vigilant in case of aftershocks. - BERNAMA
