'Indian side has made clear...': MEA as Russia sanctions bill threatening 100% tariff clears US House

The ministry of external affairs on Thursday said that India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its people. The statement came in response to the Russia sanctions bill, passed by the US Congress on Wednesday.

Amid a threat of 100 per cent tariffs by the US, India said it will continue to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people through diversified sourcing and based on evolving market dynamics.

Taking a note of the passage of the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, the ministry said it was monitoring developments on the matter.

The ministry said the issue has been discussed at high levels in recent months with various US interlocutors. India has “clearly articulated” the potential implications for not just the bilateral relationship but also the international energy market.

“The Indian side has also made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests,” the statement read. The government assured that it will work with Indian trade and industry bodies to deal with implications of the bill which also seeks to impose tariffs on those buying oil from Russia.
