US issues security alert for citizens in Saudi Arabia

Translate

The US Embassy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued a security alert on Friday, October 30, regarding security risks within the kingdom.

The Embassy warned US citizens of the potential for attacks on airports, which could lead to the closure of airspace, the cancellation of flights, and disruptions to travel.

The Embassy said that, as of October 23, the US Department of State has ordered the departure of non-emergency US government personnel and their family members from Saudi Arabia, citing these security risks.

The US mission noted that the Iranian-backed Houthi group has carried out hostile acts against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilian airports and vital infrastructure, which have resulted in civilian casualties and significant disruptions to travel.

The embassy warned that these hostilities could escalate rapidly, extending beyond the areas currently affected and potentially leading to broader security developments.

It added that US government personnel working in Saudi Arabia are now required to obtain special authorization from the head of the US mission before using any airport within the kingdom, following recent missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi airports.

The embassy urged US citizens to exercise the utmost caution should they choose to use Saudi airports, and advised them to monitor the status of their flights directly through the airlines and airports, in anticipation of any potential changes to departure times, flight cancellations, or airspace closures.
