Sulu youth leaders plant mangroves to cushion storm surges

MAIMBUNG, Sulu — Youth leaders from various towns in Sulu planted mangroves in a coastal community here on Saturday, Aug. 15, to cushion storm surges as part of the Information-Serbisyo Caravan of the Regional Development Council-9 (RDC-9) Communication and Advocacy Committee (ComAdCom).

Marie Angelique Go, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-9 (DENR-9) regional executive director, led the initiative as part of a broader effort to bring government services closer to communities in Sulu.

The mangrove planting in Barangay Bualo Lipid highlighted the caravan’s environmental thrust and stressed its importance in shielding coastal villages from storm surges and erosion.

The local government of Maimbung, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and barangay leaders welcomed participants, including SK chairpersons and youth leaders from Jolo, Indanan, Patikul and Talipao.

Go said the activity was a “commitment to climate action,” aimed at protecting coastal ecosystems while instilling environmental stewardship among the younger generation.

Earlier in Patikul, also in Sulu, DENR-9 distributed 750 seedlings comprising giant bamboo, narra and fruit trees such as lansones and durian, alongside information, education and communication (IEC) materials to promote environmental awareness.

Around 150 residents also availed themselves of consultations and assistance on DENR programs and projects.

Go emphasized that the caravan was not only about delivering government services but also about strengthening community participation in conservation.

“Every seedling planted today is a promise of a greener tomorrow,” Go said, echoing the agency’s call for collective action against climate change. /mcm
