The Indian women’s cricket team won its second consecutive Asian Games gold medal on Tuesday. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side completed a comfortable 147-run win over Sri Lanka at the Aichi Prefectural Korogi Sports Park.
Smriti Mandhana’s half-century and quickfire knocks from Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh helped India post 216/3 in its allotted 20 overs before the spinners wrapped a web around the Lankan batters to restrict them to 69 all out.
India had also beaten Sri Lanka in the final of the recently concluded Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai. The presentation ceremony of that tournament was mired in controversy after India refused to collect the trophy from Asian Cricket Council president Mohsin Naqvi, who is also an Interior Minister in the Government of Pakistan.
Questions arose before the Asian Games about whether he would also be involved in the presentation of medals at the multi-sport event. Sportstar understands that the Pakistan minister will not be involved in the medal cereomony.
Vinod Tiwari, deputy director general of the Olympic Council of Asia, will give out the medals. He will be accompanied by Indian Olympian Shiva Kesavan.
