15 Years Later, Cersei Lannister's Best Game Of Thrones Quote Is A Top 5 Fantasy Line

Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel.

15 years after she uttered it, Cersei Lannister's (Lena Headey) Game of Thrones quote remains one of the greatest fantasy lines of all time. As one of the nastiest characters in Game of Thrones, it's natural that Cersei would also have some of the show's fieriest lines, and as a result, the fantasy genre's best lines.

The eldest daughter of Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), the lord of one of the strongest Houses in Westeros and the de facto Lord of the Seven Kingdoms for a few years, Cersei has been schooled in the art of court politics from a very young age. While her anger and arrogance often result in self-sabotage, she's still adept at the game of thrones.

She's so adept that she even outlines one of the most crucial aspects of the game, invoking the title of the HBO series in possibly the series' most memorable line. In season 1, episode 7, the apt title, "You Win or You Die", Ned confronts Cersei in one of those menacing gardens of King's Landing to share what he's learned about her children.

In response to his accusations, which could mean the deaths of her and her kids, Cersei says to Ned, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." It's arguably the best quote in Game of Thrones, and in terms of fantasy television, it has to be somewhere in the Hall of Fame.

"When You Play The Game Of Thrones, You Win Or You Die," Defines The Show

"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die," is basically the tagline of the TV show, and literally its title. It's a thematic line that contextualizes what the series is about. Everyone in the show clambering for the throne is destined to rule or die, and as only one person can win, a lot of people are going to die.

In the face of her mistakes and lies, Cersei doesn't flinch and instead tells Ned that he's the one who needs to understand what game he's playing. Whether he intended to or not, he enters the game of thrones by confronting Cersei, and with no interest in taking the throne, there's only one fate for him in Westerosi calculations.

The pain and suffering of the show comes from this great game powerful people play for the Iron Throne. Even as supernatural White Walkers gather in the North, it's the game of thrones that gnaws at Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), Cersei, and others. Even in the face of literal death, the game is what matters.

Game Of Thrones Was The Right Choice To Title The HBO Series

Fans of Game of Thrones who came to the franchise through the HBO series may be surprised to learn that Game of Thrones is not the title of George R.R. Martin's book series. The ongoing series is called A Song of Ice and Fire, another important line in both the show and books with multiple meanings.

A Game of Thrones is the title of the first book in the series, and it makes for a better show title. For one, it's shorter and punchier. A Song of Ice and Fire is a mouthful and doesn't express the action and politicking that HBO was probably hoping would capture audiences' attention when the show first aired.

A Song of Ice and Fire also points, a bit too obviously, to the secret hidden in the story which is slowly revealed throughout the series. Game of Thrones feels totally in line with the tone of the show, promises the excitement the show delivered on, and is central to themes of the series.
