EXCLUSIVE: The drama surrounding Young Sheldon’s final season nearly resulted in a major shakeup for another Big Bang Theory spinoff.
In 2024, Young Sheldon came to an end after seven seasons, with fans bidding goodbye to this corner of The Big Bang Theory franchise over the course of 14 episodes. However, the decision to wrap up Young Sheldon came as a shock to some members of the cast and crew, including Raegan Revord, who played Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy, as well as Raegan’s mother, Holly Revord. In fact, this turn of events almost resulted in Raegan not reprising Missy for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Adam Holmes, Jessica Radloff, author of Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, recalled how while interviewing people for this book, there was “a lot of emotion” when it came to the announcement of Young Sheldon ending with season 7. After this was revealed to the cast and crew, the process of trying to make Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage began, but it was kept secret to all but a select few. This ultimately caused friction once it was made public, with Radloff saying about Holly Revord’s reaction:
... And Holly Revord, who is Raegan Revord's mom, talks extremely openly about how hard that last season was. And in fact, when Chuck Lorre called Holly into his office to discuss having Reagan come on the spinoff. Holly at first was like, "Absolutely not! You know, my kid is not going on a show that they were not asked to be a main part of. Holly was adamantly against it, and Holly for a while would not talk to the producers. She ignored them, and Steve Holland. To both of their credits, they open up about the tension there, and it's fascinating.
Initially, Georgie & Mandy creators Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland, who were all also Young Sheldon’s showrunners, only revealed the then-potential spinoff’s existence to the actors they wanted to star in it, i.e. Montana Jordan (Georgie Cooper), Emily Osment (Mandy McAllister), Rachel Bay Jones (Audrey McAllister), and Will Sasso (Jim McAllister). After the four actors agreed, they were told to not mention anything about Georgie & Mandy until contracts and other business arrangements were handled. However, Jordan ended up letting Holly Revord know about it inadvertently.
As a result, when Lorre finally called in Holly Revord to tell her about the spinoff, she “had no intention of Raegan going over” to appear in it, feeling it was “too little, too late.” Holland recalls in the Young Sheldon book how Holly didn’t speak to him “for probably two months,” and Holly admitted to having “walked away” when they ran into each other. Radloff explained later in the ScreenRant interview:
… You add on to that the fact that, for reasons that are understandable, the producers couldn't tell everybody about this spinoff with Georgie and Mandy because there was a chance that was not going to happen with contracts and everything else, so they didn't want it out there. But you really can't keep a secret like that among a cast and a show because people talk all the time. And when that news leaked, it was really hurtful to a lot of people who felt they were owed the common courtesy of, 'Just let us know what's going on.' So it was hard to navigate that with everybody, but I think in the end, they all come to a really understanding place that made it a lot easier.
Eventually, Holly Revord reconciled with Holland and the other Georgie & Mandy creators, which is good news for Missy fans. Raegan Revord has since reprised the character in nine of the spinoff’s episodes, and she'll be back for Georgie & Mandy season 3. Zoe Perry, Annie Potts, Lance Barber, Matt Hobby, and Craig T. Nelson are among the other Young Sheldon alumni who have appeared in the spinoff so far. Dougie Baldwin and Jessie Prez round out the show’s main cast.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on CBS's fall 2026 TV schedule, and it can also be streamed alongside Young Sheldon on Paramount+. The Big Bang Theory and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe are both available on HBO Max.
