Weather: Disruptive rain and severe storms to hit two provinces until Friday

Here is what the weather has in store for KZN, Free State and North West on Thursday 17 September 2026.

An Orange Level 6 warning covers disruptive rain in southern KwaZulu-Natal, while severe thunderstorms are expected in parts of Free State and KZN.

KWAZULU-NATAL

Morning fog patches will develop over the western parts. Elsewhere, cloudy and cold to cool conditions will prevail, with very cold weather in the south-west.

Scattered showers and thundershowers will occur over the far north, while the rest of the area can expect widespread showers and thundershowers.

Along the coast, moderate to fresh south-westerly winds will blow, becoming moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly winds in the south during the afternoon.

The UVB sunburn index is going to be low.

DURBAN

Durban is going to be cloudy with widespread showers and rain.

The wind will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming fresh southerly to south-easterly from late afternoon.

Temperatures will range from 16°C to 18°C.

FREE STATE

Cloudy, windy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the west where it will be partly cloudy.

BLOEMFONTEIN

Bloemfontein is going to be partly cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers

Temperatures will range from a minimum of 8°C to a maximum of 22°C.

NORTH WEST

North West province should be partly cloudy, windy and warm with isolated thundershowers.

MAHIKENG

Mahikeng is going to be partly cloudy and windy with isolated thundershowers.

Temperatures will range from a minimum of 13°C. to a maximum of 30°C.
