Jakarta opens two retention ponds to help prevent floods

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo inaugurated the Bambu Hitam and Batu Bangkong retention ponds in Cipayung Subdistrict, East Jakarta, on Monday morning.
With a combined storage capacity of 36,550 cubic meters, the ponds are part of the Jakarta administration's efforts to strengthen flood control by storing rainwater and conserving water resources.
“The ponds were built by Jakarta's Water Resources Agency in 2023 using blue-green infrastructure and nature-based solutions. They serve as water-control facilities, raw water sources, and public spaces,” Pramono said after the inauguration.
Batu Bangkong pond covers 1.3 hectares, including a 0.58-hectare water body, and has a storage capacity of 20,300 cubic meters.
Bambu Hitam pond covers about 2.1 hectares, including a 0.50-hectare water body, and has a storage capacity of 16,250 cubic meters.
Pramono said the ponds help capture and store rainwater, preventing it from immediately overwhelming drainage systems and rivers while supporting water conservation in surrounding areas.
“The ponds' main function is to store water. Rather than channeling it away, the water seeps into the ground, making these sites important for conservation,” he said.
Both ponds also feature wastewater treatment facilities, jogging paths, children's playgrounds, community halls, multipurpose courts, and sunken plazas.
The areas can serve as public spaces during dry weather and provide additional water storage during rainfall.
Pramono said flood management must focus on sustained prevention rather than action only when rain or flooding occurs. The administration is continuing to develop retention ponds, reservoirs, and river-normalization projects.
He also sees potential to build more retention ponds in East Jakarta to expand water-storage capacity and gradually strengthen flood prevention.
“Jakarta's flood response cannot begin only when it rains or flooding occurs. We must prioritize prevention, and I want these public facilities, which residents can use free of charge, to be properly maintained,” Pramono said.
