Who was Frank Carr?

Mr Carr was a farmer dedicated to overcoming the obstacles of countryside living, who worked in his family business at Lee Gate Farm.

The enterprise looked after more than 2,000 acres of owned and leased lands, with 250 breeding cows and 1,300 breeding ewes in the beef and sheep farming operation along with other store and finishing cattle.

Mr Carr took several years away from farming to pursue education and travelling before joining the business again, Farmers Guardian reported.

He said in 2024 that his time away from the farm made him realise he wanted to pursue farming for the rest of his life.

What did he say on Countryfile?

Presenter Henson chatted to Mr Carr during a visit to Lee Gate Farm, telling audiences the farmer had “taken on a huge amount of debt in a bid to make a future in farming” in Malhamdale.

In the episode, Mr Carr was seen handling livestock and inspecting lambing, as well as discussing the realities of being a farmer in the Yorkshire Dales.

He said: "In farming, every day is an opportunity to learn. Farming is a very rewarding profession, although it can be very challenging mentally; it can also be very rewarding, so that's another reason why I love what I do."

Mr Carr touched on the financial pressures facing hill farmers.

"At the end of the day, farming is a business, so the financial aspect is always an issue. There’s no real clarity on the future, especially for hill farms,” he said.

He also discussed his return to the farm and his efforts to save its family legacy.

Frank’s moving post about ‘dark’ times

Mr Carr previously shared his family’s poignant motto that had guided him through difficult times.

When asked by Farmers Guardian about the most valuable advice he had ever been given, he said: "Well, it came from my father but also he got it from my grandma.

“It's, 'When things look dark, turn your face towards the sun and the shadows will fall behind'."

When did he die?

Mr Carr died on September 25. No cause of death has been given.

His death was announced by Farmers Guardian on October 6, with the outlet posting a lengthy tribute on social media.

His family’s heartbreak

Mr Carr’s family shared a moving tribute to the farmer on their Lee Gate Farm Instagram page on October 5.

Sharing a brief video of the sun breaking through the clouds over the Yorkshire Dales, they wrote: “After every sunset, there comes a new day.”

The caption also included Carr’s birthday - July 24, 1991 - and the date that he died.

Fans and friends alike flooded the comments with their support, with one writing: “Frank, this online community, and entire industry has lost a true diamond. You’ll be so missed by everyone. Thinking of your family and closest friends right now and sending so much love. Rest easy.”

“My heart aches and so will so many others. You were a true gentleman with the kindest soul. You’ll forever be missed. Sending love to your family. Rest easy Frankster,” another posted.

What other tributes have been made?

Farmers Guardian announced Mr Carr’s death on social media, stating: "We are deeply saddened by the death of North Yorkshire hill farmer Frank Carr, aged 35.

"Frank was a familiar face to Farmers Guardian readers and someone we were fortunate to work with many times over the years."

The publication continued: "He was a true friend of Farmers Guardian and will be greatly missed."

The newspaper's editor, Katie Jones, also paid personal tribute, writing: "Frank will be remembered not only as a talented young farmer but as someone who represented the very best of the next generation - committed to his family, his livestock, his land and the future of British farming."

What is Frank’s legacy?

Mr Carr was the face of the newspaper’s #Farm24 campaign for several years, which highlights the real faces of British agriculture.

He had helped to highlight the realities of modern-day farming through the initiative and has been praised by thousands before and since his death for championing farming in the Dales.
