A major Tasmanian highway was earlier cut off after a boat "became stuck" during transport.

Earlier on Friday, Tasmania Police said the Channel Highway had become "completely blocked 5 kilometres south of Cygnet, at Gardners Bay at the intersection of Gospel Hall Road".

The road is one of the main arterial roads south of Hobart.

The boat is the Emmalisa, a wooden ferry built around 1947 and currently under restoration.

Police said there was "no alternate route, and heavy equipment is being sourced to remove the boat" from its predicament.

At 1:46pm, police advised the boat had been "removed from the road", and traffic was flowing freely again.
