The Heartbreakers Reunite Alongside Chris Stapleton at Americana Awards: Watch

The Heartbreakers reunited Wednesday night at the 2026 Americana Honors & Awards in Nashville, taking the stage at the Ryman Auditorium as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Original members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair came together for their first performance since 2017, joined by Chris Stapleton for “American Girl” and “Breakdown.” Later, longtime Heartbreakers Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston joined the group for a closing rendition of “You Wreck Me.” Watch footage of the performance below.

Stapleton’s connection with the Heartbreakers goes back to 2017 when he opened for them and Tom Petty during three dates on their 40th anniversary tour. He has remained in the band’s orbit since, recording with Campbell and Tench and collaborating with the former’s Dirty Knobs.

The reunion arrives as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers celebrate their 50th anniversary. Earlier Wednesday, the Petty estate announced Origins 1971-1978, a new archival box set tracing the band’s formative years. Due November 6th via UMe, the collection includes newly mixed and remastered editions of the band’s first two albums, previously unreleased recordings, live material, and restored footage from their 1978 appearance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test.

The estate also shared “Parade of Loons,” a previously unreleased Heartbreakers recording from 1978, alongside an animated music video starring Young Sheldon actor Iain Armitage.
