Biotech startup Rakuten Medical is eyeing the U.S. market for its novel idea to conquer cancer — light illumination therapy.

The treatment, based on photoimmunotherapy — a combination of drug administration and illumination with red light — has long been in development as part of its Alluminox platform.

“We believe this could become a new platform for cancer treatment,” Minami Maeda, who became CEO of Rakuten Medical in July, said in a recent interview with The Japan Times.
