China Box Office: ‘Resident Evil’ Holds Top Spot for Fourth Straight Frame as 2014’s ‘John Wick’ Debuts in Third

Constantin Film and Sony Pictures’ horror reboot “Resident Evil” secured its fourth consecutive weekend at number one across mainland China, grossing RMB28.5 million ($4.3 million) over the Oct. 30–Nov. 1 frame, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Since launching during the Golden Week corridor on Oct. 5, the video game adaptation has generated a cumulative haul of $71.3 million.
New Classics Pictures’ crime procedural drama “Traces of Justice” retained second place, bringing in $3.9 million in its fifth weekend. Directed by Chen Sicheng (“Detective Chinatown”) and co-written with Zhang Ji and Yan Zijie, the period investigation epic has pushed its cumulative gross to $98.5 million since rolling out on Oct. 1. Starring Zhang Yi, Ma Li, and Chen Minghao alongside guest appearances by Karry Wang, Fan Chengcheng, and Chen Feiyu, the multi-decade drama tracks an elite public security detective solving complex historical cases based on real events.
Lionsgate’s action thriller “John Wick” landed in third position, taking $2.3 million over its three-day opening weekend, 12 years after its 2014 global release. China Film Group, which handled the release, had told original rights buyer Huayi Bros. in 2014 that the film was too violent for China, and regulators rejected it in 2015. Reeves’ work was later pulled from Chinese streaming platforms after he joined a 2022 Tibet House U.S. benefit concert. “John Wick: Chapter 4” and spinoff “Ballerina” reached Chinese cinemas in 2025, but “Chapter 2” and “Chapter 3” have yet to be released there.
Beijing Joy Fun Pictures’ family body-swap comedy “Mr. & Mrs. Pardon” moved to fourth place, taking $2 million over the weekend frame to lift its cumulative gross to $59 million. Directed by Shen Chunyang and written by Ma Duo, the satirical feature stars real-life comedic pair Shen Chunyang and Xiao Shenyang alongside Jia Bing and Yu Yang as a bickering middle-aged couple forced to navigate marriage and domestic friction after swapping bodies.
Dirty Monkeys’ war comedy-drama “Once Upon a Time in the Middle East” rounded out the top five in its twelfth weekend of release, collecting $900,000. Directed by Wen Muye (“Dying to Survive”) and starring Shen Teng, Jiang Qiming, Aarif Rahman, and Omar Sherif, the enduring summer blockbuster has amassed a cumulative total of $356.9 million since launching on Aug. 11.
Mainland China’s overall weekend box office gross slid to $18.2 million, as the market remained locked in a quiet post-holiday fall corridor. The 2026 year-to-date box office reached $4.73 billion, down 29.0% compared to the same period in 2025.
