Man arrested over early morning police pursuit with large sword in car

A 22-year-old man has been charged after leading police on a pursuit back and forth across the NSW-ACT border in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Officers allegedly found a large sword, a flick knife, gloves, and balaclavas in a search after the man was arrested.

According to NSW Police, the driver of a Kia hatchback failed to stop for Monaro Police District officers about 2am in Crestwood, on the NSW side of the ACT-NSW border.

NSW Police pursued the vehicle until it turned onto Canberra Avenue and entered the ACT, when ACT Policing officers took up the pursuit through the suburbs of Tralee, Hume and Tuggeranong.

A short time later, NSW Police officers rejoined the pursuit as the car re-entered the state in Jerrabomberra.

The pursuit lead officers through Jerrabomberra Heights, Karabar and Queanbeyan CBD before the driver crossed the border back into the ACT.

ACT Policing continued the pursuit onto Yass Road, where officers successfully deployed road spikes near the intersection of Sutton Road.

The hatchback eventually came to a stop back in NSW, on Crawford Street in Queanbeyan, where the 22-year-old driver allegedly ran from the vehicle.

After a pursuit on foot, the man was arrested and searched, with officers allegedly locating and seizing a flick knife.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly also revealed a large sword, gloves, and balaclavas.

The 22-year-old was taken to Queanbeyan Police station, where he was charged with aggravated failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified, and possession of a knife in a public place.

Second police pursuit in three hours

In the early hours of Thursday morning, ACT police officers were also involved in a separate pursuit with the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle.

Police said about 4:15am a 42-year-old man was seen driving at excessive speeds in a silver Volkswagen Passat, which they said had been stolen from Lyneham in June.

The car allegedly continued at high speed through Weston Creek and Yarralumla, crossing the median strips and repeatedly driving on the wrong side of the road.

ACT Policing said when officers activated their lights and sirens, directing him to stop, he allegedly continued to drive at speeds of up to 100km/h in 60km/h zones.

The vehicle stopped in Curtin around 4:30am, where the driver was arrested.

He refused to undergo a roadside drug test, and police said they located several quantities of white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine in the Volkswagen.

The 42-year-old, who was subject to a good behaviour order, is facing charges including aggravated furious driving, driving a stolen car, failing to stop for police, refusal to provide an oral fluid sample, and driving while disqualified.
