Police divers and helicopters search for missing fisherman

Translate

Police from Victoria and NSW are searching for a 56-year-old man who went missing after going fishing near the Murray River yesterday.

Victoria Police said the man, who uses a mobility scooter, left a note with a friend saying he was going fishing in Nyah West, a small town north-west of Swan Hill near the Victorian-NSW border.

The alarm was raised about 6pm when the man did not return home.

A search of the river found what appeared to be a fishing set-up and a mobility scooter, along with some of the man's possessions.

Victoria Police said witnesses saw the man driving to the fishing spot at Trotting Track about 10:30am.

Campers at a nearby recreation reserve said they noticed the fishing set-up at 3pm but had not seen the man.

Local police, the Victoria Police Air Wing and the State Emergency Service (SES) searched the river, riverbank, nearby tracks and surrounding area overnight.

Police from Victoria and NSW will search the land and the river today.

It is understood Victoria Police divers have also been deployed as part of the search.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
