Boy, 6, drowned while fishing alone in Kulai pond, police rule out foul play

KULAI: Police have ruled out foul play in the drowning of a 6-year-old boy found in a retention pond near Taman Sungai Mas yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said initial investigations revealed the boy's parents left for work at 6.30am, leaving him asleep with his 17-year-old sister.

However, at 10am, an acquaintance contacted the mother to inform her that the child had been found unconscious in the pond, located about 50m from their home.

Firefighters retrieved the boy from the water.

Tan said investigations showed the victim was believed to have gone to the pond alone to fish, following the discovery of a fishing rod near the scene.

A medical officer pronounced the child dead at 11.15am. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as drowning.

Tan said the case has been classified as a sudden death report, with further investigations ongoing.

He advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and not allow them to engage in activities near high-risk areas such as ponds, rivers, and open waters without adult supervision.
