Hideo Kojima teases upcoming “big live-action” film cameo

Translate

Hideo Kojima has suggested he could be set to make a cameo appearance in an upcoming “big live action” film.

Last year, gaming legend Hideo Kojima voiced Paul Moldebrandt (a mole who works at the Zootopia Police Department) in Zootopia 2’s Japanese dub after being asked by the film’s director Jared Bush.

He also appeared as Commissioner Watanuki in live-action Japanese crime drama Vivant. “For the role, I took off my glasses, slicked my hair back, got into costume, and gave it my best, but it was decided that I looked ‘too young’ to be the Superintendent General of the Metropolitan Police Department, and that ‘there are no real-life examples of one with a beard.’ So they adjusted my appearance with CGI. See if you can spot me,” he wrote on X

In the first episode of his returning Koji10 radio show, Kojima confirmed that he’s already shot “a few other things” including a “big live-action movie” a “major anime title” and a video game after being approached by various directors. He didn’t go into any further details, even staying tight-lipped when asked if the film was Japanese or an international production.

However fans have been speculating about what the big live-action movie could be, with many convinced it’ll be Godzilla Minus Zero. The sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One has been written and directed by Kojima’s friend Takashi Yamazaki and is due to hit cinemas later this year.

Kojima is also planning on bringing the worlds of cinema and gaming together with Physint. “It is a completely new ‘action espionage’ for the next-generation,” he explained when the project was first announced in 2024. “It will be created using cutting-edge technology and the best talents from around the world, both from film and video games. Of course this is an interactive ‘game’, but the look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc are all at the next level of ‘digital entertainment’ that could be called a ‘movie’.”

It’ll be a while before you can play it though. Physint was originally pencilled in for a 2030 release date but last month, PlayStation confirmed they were pulling out of the project before Xbox stepped in to rescue the game. It’s not known how much this will affect production.

Kojima has hit back at rumours Physint was cancelled at PlayStation because of ballooning costs and the poor sales of Death Stranding 2. “None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source and as such we encourage you to take them with a dose of scepticism.”
