Vote Helen Zille for ‘integrity’ in Johannesburg government – DA

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says Johannesburg residents will see what he described as “integrity” in government if Helen Zille becomes mayor after the 4 November local government elections.

Hill-Lewis made the comments while addressing hundreds of DA supporters during the party’s Working For All Tour in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Receiving support

The tour forms part of the DA’s campaign ahead of the 2026 local government elections, with the party placing service delivery, municipal management and economic activity at the centre of its campaign.

Hill-Lewis said the party was receiving support from residents across Johannesburg, including some who had not previously voted for the DA.

“We will not disappoint you. With your support, you will see what integrity looks like in government and what a working city feels like.”

He said the DA believed improvements in basic municipal services could have wider economic consequences.

According to Hill-Lewis, when basic services function properly, businesses can invest, residents can access employment opportunities and households can avoid paying privately for services they already fund through municipal charges.

“When basic things start working, something important will happen. Businesses invest again. People get into work. Opportunity is spread,” he said.

DA campaign in Johannesburg

Helen Zille is the DA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg in the upcoming elections.

She is facing a field that includes ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, EFF candidate Tlaleng Mofokeng, MK Party candidate Bongani Baloyi and Patriotic Alliance candidate Kenny Kunene.

The DA has made the state of Johannesburg’s infrastructure and basic services a central theme of its campaign.

In August, the party launched its “Get Joburg Working For All” campaign, with Hill-Lewis saying the focus was on restoring basic services, improving municipal management and addressing infrastructure decline.

Management of public funds

The DA has also said its broader local government platform includes professional municipal appointments, tighter management of public funds, investment in infrastructure and measures aimed at improving service delivery.

The 2026 local government elections are scheduled for 4 November, when voters across South Africa will elect representatives to municipal councils.

The outcome in Johannesburg will determine which parties or coalitions have the numbers to govern the City of Johannesburg and choose its mayor.
