Doctor Who Officially Replaces The Doctor In February 2027 Return

Doctor Who has seen several different faces in the role of the Doctor over the years, from the OG played by William Hartnell all the way through the most recent Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth and now even as an animated cartoon in the upcoming Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew children's show. Some versions have naturally become more beloved than others, with Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor remaining an enduring favorite from the classic era, while David Tennant and Matt Smith are frequently counted among the most popular in the modern timeline.
The constant recasting is also baked directly into Doctor Who's mythology, as when the Doctor is mortally wounded, their Time Lord biology allows them to regenerate into a new body, complete with a different appearance and personality while still remaining the "same" character. It's a clever piece of canon that has allowed the franchise to reinvent its lead repeatedly for more than six decades.
In 2027, however, Doctor Who is taking that idea in a very different direction by sidelining the Doctor altogether and placing another beloved character at the center of a brand-new adventure.
River Song will be no stranger to Doctor Who fans, and she's officially taking the spotlight in an upcoming 2027 release titled Stormcage, an upcoming second-person novel written by Alex Kingston herself. The adventure puts readers into River's shoes, temporarily replacing the Doctor as the character whose decisions typically drive the story and putting you into the iconic character's POV instead.
River was introduced in 2008's "Silence in the Library" as an archaeologist who mysteriously already knew the Doctor intimately, despite him having no idea who she was. Her famously complicated and somewhat divisive storyline was untangled somewhat during the Matt Smith era, revealing that River is actually Melody Pond, the daughter of Amy Pond and Rory Williams. She eventually marries the Doctor, although the two meet at different points in their respective timelines. That unusual history has allowed River to have adventures essentially anywhere within the larger Doctor Who continuity.
Stormcage takes advantage of River Song's unique background by returning her to one of the most recognizable locations from her story: the Stormcage Containment Facility. While River is imprisoned there, aliens attack the facility to free a dangerous creature. In the process, they tear open what is described as a "Fate Nexus," creating passages leading to different destinations across time and space.
You can pre-order Doctor Who: Stormcage now on Amazon.
Instead of following a single predetermined storyline, Stormcage is an interactive, branching adventure where your decisions actually impact the story you experience. The reader assumes River's role and chooses how she responds to the crisis, sending her through different points in the past, present, and future as she attempts to stop the escapees and prevent the damage to reality from spreading.
Familiar friends and enemies appear along the way, with the Doctor himself also confirmed to show up at some point. The choose-your-own-adventure format means different choices can lead River toward dramatically different conclusions, both good and bad.
Kingston herself authored the 304-page book, making the project especially fitting after playing River for nearly two decades. She previously wrote the 2021 River Song novel The Ruby's Curse, while the character has also enjoyed an extensive life outside television through Big Finish's The Diary of River Song, which ultimately reached 12 series, and its follow-up, The Death and Life of River Song.
Stormcage is an officially licensed Doctor Who title, and the hardcover is scheduled to release on February 9, 2027, priced at $30, with an ebook edition arriving the same day and available to pre-order now.
