Spider-Man's superpowers just got a major upgrade, as the Marvel hero celebrates a historic moment in his long heroic career. The Webslinger's power set is iconic, so it is serious business to try to elaborate on that, but lately, the franchise has introduced some exciting new evolutions to the hero's Spider-Sense. His new level of battlefield awareness is just one more step in the direction of Spider-Man leveling up as one of Marvel's most powerful superheroes.

Peter Parker has a preternatural sense of danger. He can sense an enemy sneaking up behind him, or a high-speed projectile launched his way. It is essential to Peter's survival and success as a superhero. That has always been engrained in the Spider-Man mythos. At times, Marvel has explored what would happen if Spider-Man lost his Spider-Sense, but now it is trying the opposite.

During a climactic fight against his newest nemesis, the villain Ravage, Peter's Spider-Sense, which has been getting more refined lately, finally gets its official new name in Marvel canon.

Warning! Spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #1002 ahead!

Marvel Officially Names Spider-Man's New Upgraded Spider-Sense

Spider-Man #1002, Spider-Man's upgraded Spidey Sense is dubbed 'Ultra' during his fight with Ravager

The milestone Amazing Spider-Man #1000 came and went without resolving the ongoing conflict between Spider-Man and Ravage, a new Marvel villain with a shocking personal connection to Peter Parker. Issue #1002 is mostly an extended fight sequence between the two, though by the end, it leaves that plot thread still dangling. It seems clear Spider-Man's writers intend for him to be a Green Goblin-level recurring antagonist.

The biggest takeaway from the issue comes in the narration. Spider-Man's new ability to effectively lets him fight on "autopilot." Instead of his ulterior, subconscious Spider-Sense warning his conscious mind where the next blow is coming from during battle, he can give into this Sense entirely and fight instinctually. In Amazing Spider-Man #1002, Peter finds himself pushing back against this new "Ultra Spider-Sense" at a pivotal moment.

Spider-Sense manifested as words "look out behind you" over Spidey's head.

Peter has to "break the instinctual flow of this newfound strength..." It is a telling moment, with the narration stating that "the man has regained control" before unconsciously doing something he would later regret. Peter Parker almost became more spider than man, and realizing he is more than just his combat instincts was actually the big heroic beat of this issue. That said, this is certainly not the last readers hear of this "Ultra Spider-Sense."

As An Ambitious New Era Starts For Spider-Man, His Upraded Powers Should Play A Pivotal Role

Spider-Man is taking a big leap forward in Marvel lore right now. That might be hard to fathom for the most recognizable Marvel hero of all time, with more than sixty years of lore to his name. It is true, though. Peter Parker is poised to become the leader of a new Avengers roster, a first in his career, and as a result, he's going to have to stop thinking less locally, and more globally, as a superhero. Literally and figuratively. He's going to have to fight bigger battles against stronger enemies. He is going to need his "Ultra Spider-Sense."

Spider-Man has to evolve in multiple ways to be worthy of leading Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The point Amazing Spider-Man #1002 makes is that Peter Parker can't lose himself in that process. He still has to be the hero that is willing to make choices others won't. Even if those choices are messy, like letting Ravage walk away to fight another day after their knock-down, drag-out brawl through the streets of New York City.

So, part of this new era of his heroic journey for Peter will be learning to lean into his "Ultra Spider-Sense" without being consumed by it. That is a refreshing, exciting dynamic for Marvel to set up for Spider-Man as 2026 draws to a close and 2027 looks to be a big year for the Wallcrawler.

Amazing Spider-Man #1002 is available now from Marvel Comics.
