The Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested a mayor, a municipal manager and a chief financial officer of a Western Cape municipality in connection with alleged corruption involving a security contract.

Police said the alleged corruption involved a security contract with a municipality on the province’s southern coast.

SA Police Service national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrests followed information that kickbacks were being demanded from a businessman who had been awarded the security contract in exchange for keeping it.

“It’s alleged that the businessman had already paid hundreds of thousands of rands out of fear that his security services contract would be terminated,” Mathe said.

All three officials will face charges of corruption and are due to appear in court on Monday.
