Rob Gronkowski walked into Gillette Stadium on Saturday, November 7, as a New England Patriots Hall of Famer. He also left having reignited a tight end argument that never really went away. Former teammate Rob Ninkovich took the microphone during the ceremony and aimed straight at Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce. Tom Brady, Mike Vrabel and Julian Edelman were among those watching. Ninkovich spent seven seasons beside Gronkowski, so nobody expected neutrality, but the bluntness still landed. Fans in Foxborough heard a very clear opinion about what makes a tight end a tight end.
Rob Ninkovich Says Rob Gronkowski Is A True Tight End
Ninkovich lined up next to Gronkowski from 2010 to 2016, and he spoke like a man defending family.
"Kelce and this guy don't even come close," Ninkovich said on stage outside Gillette Stadium. "He's a receiver and this guy is a tight end, so."
His case rests on the dirty work. Gronkowski blocked defenders in the run game and protected Brady on passing downs, and none of that appears in a box score. Ninkovich has held this view since at least 2018, when he went further on the Hardwick & Richards podcast.

"I mean, I've played against Kelce, and I've thrown him around like he's a little doll. The guy doesn't want to block, so when you're a tight end, and you don't want to block, you're not really a tight end."
Travis Kelce And Rob Gronkowski Career Stats Tell Different Stories
Numbers give both camps something to hold. Kelce, now in his 14th season, has piled up 1,109 receptions and 13,412 receiving yards, well clear of the 621 catches and 9,286 yards Gronkowski finished with. Gronkowski counters with 92 touchdown catches against Kelce's 84, and with four Super Bowl titles to three. Three of those four came in New England, and the fourth arrived with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
Playoff production matters too. Gronkowski logged 1,163 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns across 16 postseason games with the Patriots, a pace few tight ends have matched in January.
Kelce has never treated any of this as a feud. He called Gronkowski "an unbelievable person" years ago, and when he spoke on Fanatics View in 2021, he went further.
"The guy is an unbelievable person, talent, you name it, man. I might be one of the biggest Gronk fans out there, let it be told."
Kelce is also a fair bit younger, and Gronkowski's body gave out long before his talent did. Those facts rarely fit on a debate show graphic. Ninkovich simply chose the one night when nobody in the building was going to argue back.
