Authority closes parts of Bromo tourist area after Pengol Savanna fire

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has closed several tourist access points in the Mount Bromo area of East Java following a fire in the Pengol Savanna.

The Head of the TNBTS Authority, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that the closure of tourist access to Mount Bromo, via the Jemplang route in Malang District, has been in effect since Thursday (September 10), the day the fire first broke out in the Pengol Savanna.

"Tourist visits to Bromo via the Jemplang entrance have been suspended to support fire containment and firefighting efforts and ensure visitor safety," Rudi noted in a statement received on Friday.

He said this partial closure of tourist access is indefinite, as the authority must still coordinate with a joint team to assess the safety situation at the affected site.

He informed that tourists can still access the Mount Bromo area via entrances at Cemorolawang (Probolinggo District) and Wonokitri (Pasuruan District).

However, tourists using this entrance can only access Mount Bromo as far as the Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir), with the Lembah Watangan Savanna remaining closed to visitors.

For reference, TNBTS limits the number of daily visitors to 2,752.

"Access to the fire site is reserved exclusively for personnel, partners, and volunteers involved in containment and firefighting operations within the scope of their duties," Rudi emphasized.

Meanwhile, the local authority confirmed that the transportation route connecting Malang District and Lumajang District, passing through Poncokusumo Sub-district and Senduro Sub-district, remains open.

The authority urges all tourism service providers and Mount Bromo tourists to heed this information and avoid approaching the fire site.

"Tourism activities at Ranu Regulo may continue in accordance with existing regulations. The public must exercise increased caution regarding the potential for fires," Rudi pointed out.
