Every Video Game Movie Confirmed For 2027 (So Far)

Video game movies have already given fans a lot to talk about in 2026. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie blew past $1 billion worldwide, while Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil opened to more than $108 million globally. Mario proved there is still huge demand for popular gaming characters and worlds done right, while Resident Evil showed that audiences will also turn up for something darker and much less interested in playing it safe.

After the year these types of adaptions have had in 2026, attention is already turning to what comes next. Some of the 2027 releases are continuing franchises audiences already know, while others are finally getting their shot after years of rumors, casting updates, and development news. For fans who have watched some of these projects crawl toward production, seeing actual release dates attached to them makes the next year feel a lot more real.

There's a good chance that the 2027 lineup is unfinished. There is still time for more adaptations known to be in development to grab release dates, and several of the movies already on the schedule are keeping major details under wraps. Still, fans already have confirmed dates, popular games finally reaching theaters, and a few long-awaited projects that are starting to feel much less hypothetical.

4 Sonic The Hedgehog 4

March 19, 2027

Sonic flying through space with a hand around his throat in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already has a pretty obvious reason for longtime fans to pay attention. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ended by introducing Amy Rose and an entire army of Metal Sonics, and both are officially returning when the fourth movie hits theaters on March 19, 2027. Kristen Bell will voice Amy, while Jeff Fowler is back to direct and Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey are among the returning cast for Sonic the Hedgehog 4..

Paramount still has not revealed the actual plot, but putting Amy and Metal Sonic together is hard to ignore. Both made their game debuts in 1993’s Sonic CD, where Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy before facing Sonic (via SEGA). That does not guarantee the movie is adapting Sonic CD, but after the third movie’s credits scene, it is the clearest piece of Sonic history fans have to work with so far.

3 The Legend Of Zelda

April 30, 2027

The Legend of Zelda has spent 40 years sending Link across different versions of Hyrule, and now Nintendo is finally taking that world into live action. The movie arrives April 30, 2027, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, Bo Bragason as Zelda, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball behind the camera (via Nintendo). The first photos already have Link in green, Zelda carrying her bow, and both sporting their unmistakable Hylian ears.

The bigger question is which version of Zelda fans are actually getting. Nintendo has confirmed that this is an original story drawing from the characters, ideas, and worlds built across the series rather than a straight adaptation of one game. So Ocarina of Time fans should not expect a scene-for-scene retelling, and Breath of the Wild fans cannot claim this one either. For now, Hyrule itself is the throughline.

2 A Minecraft Movie 2

July 23, 2027

Jack Black as Steve with a miner's helmet on and a pickaxe in A Minecraft Movie.

The first Minecraft movie waited until its post-credits scene to introduce Alex, showing Steve at the door with the character whose face was deliberately kept offscreen. The sequel is not being nearly as coy. Kirsten Dunst is playing Alex alongside Jack Black’s Steve when the movie arrives on July 23, 2027, with Jared Hess back as director. Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge are also returning.

What Alex is actually doing in the story is still a mystery. That gives the Minecraft sequel a lot of room to play with Alex, since fans know her as one of Minecraft’s default characters rather than someone with a fixed personality or backstory. The first film created an entire personality for Steve, and now the sequel gets to decide who its version of Alex is going to be.

1 Five Nights At Freddy's 3

Teased For 2027 - No Official Date Yet

Five Nights at Freddys came out in 2015

Freddy Fazbear is definitely coming back, but fans may have to wait a little longer than expected. Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is in development, with Gary Dauberman writing the script and Matthew Lillard set to return as William Afton. Dauberman taking over the screenplay is also a pretty big change after FNAF creator Scott Cawthon had a hand in writing both of the first two movies (via IMDB).

Lillard has said filming is expected to begin in 2027, which makes a release that same year possible, but far from certain (via IMDB). There is also no word yet on how closely the movie will follow Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. The game is where Springtrap becomes the main threat, so Afton’s return obviously raises some eyebrows, but Blumhouse has not confirmed whether the third movie is heading in that exact direction.
