Cruel Santino and Mavo pair up for 'Siesta'

Translate

Cruel Santino has long been a pioneer of Nigeria’s alternative scene, and on Siesta he teams up with with the hitmaker Mavo for a track that stretches the boundaries of the country’s alte soundscape. Released in early November, it compresses a lot of atmosphere and experimentation into a two-minute runtime.

The production blends dream-pop, alt-R&B and electronic bounce with low-slung Afrobeats rhythms. Atmospheric synth pads and heavy sub-bass form the foundation, leaving space for Santino’s delayed vocal layers and the conceptual world-building he’s known for.

Mavo’s presence is what gives the song its edge. His street-pop vocal inflections bring a grounded melodic contrast to Santino’s hazy, unconventional phrasing. The pairing creates a texture that feels futuristic but remains accessible, even to listeners who don’t usually follow the alternative lane.

“Siesta” is a good example of how the boundaries in West African music keep dissolving. By connecting alternative subcultures with contemporary street-pop vocals, it stands out as a forward-thinking release for anyone looking for fresh sonic directions.
