Soweto manhunt: ‘Dangerous’ suspect wanted for partner’s murder

Translate

Police have launched a manhunt and released an image of a 27-year-old man wanted in connection with the murder of his live-in girlfriend in Soweto.

Jabulisile Josephina Tshabalala, 37, was found in Orlando East on 13 August, six days after she was last seen alive.

Her body was covered with blankets and clothes. She had allegedly been stabbed to death.

Investigators have since obtained a J50 warrant for the arrest of Simiso Silomo Phakathi on a murder charge.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said authorities consider Phakathi dangerous and have urged him to surrender.

Woman found dead six days after last sighting

Tshabalala was last seen alive on 7 August.

Police later found her body in the backroom where she had been living with Phakathi.

Mathe said officers are pursuing leads as they search for the wanted man.

“The SAPS is issuing a firm warning to the suspect: hand yourself over to the police at the nearest police station without delay,” she said.

“There is nowhere to hide, and police will continue pursuing every lead until you are brought before a court of law.”

SAPS warns public not to help suspect

Mathe also warned members of the public against harbouring Phakathi or helping him evade arrest.

“Do not harbour or assist a wanted suspect,” she said.

“Information provided to the police could be critical in ensuring that justice is served.”

SAPS issued the appeal during Women’s Month as it intensifies efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

“As the country marks Women’s Month, the SAPS reiterates that violence against women will not be tolerated,” Mathe said.

She said police would pursue those responsible for crimes against women and bring them before the courts.

Anyone who sees Phakathi or has information about his whereabouts can contact Warrant Officer Zwane on 082 455 8572 or report to the nearest police station.
