A fire has damaged two chalets at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park.

A fire broke out at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park on Thursday, damaging two tourist chalets that were undergoing renovations.

SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakuli said camp staff, including the ranger team, had responded immediately and managed to contain the blaze before it could spread.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

“The two chalets were out of commission and were not occupied. They were being renovated, and the area was cordoned off,” Thakuli added.

He said guests at the camp were not affected as the fire occurred away from occupied accommodation.

“Our guests were not affected. It happened far from chalets that were occupied. We are investigating the cause. We are grateful that the fire was contained. Our staff attempted to put out the fire and were later assisted by the Phalaborwa Emergency Services,” Thakuli said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is under way.

Thakuli said other facilities at the camp, including the park shop, filling station, elephant museum and camp reception, remained operational as normal.
