Indonesia uses foreign worker data to guide skills policy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Yassierli said data on foreign workers can help Indonesia identify labor-market needs and prepare domestic workers with skills required by businesses and industries.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, he said the data shows which jobs and skills are most in demand across business and industrial sectors.

"With prominent data, we can learn which roles foreign workers are predominantly filling, such as process engineers, for instance. This indicates that the labor market has a need for personnel in these specific fields," he said.

Yassierli said the data identifies positions most frequently filled by foreign workers, helping the government assess labor needs and prepare Indonesian workers with relevant skills.

The data can also help identify positions and skills that may become critical in the future, he said.

The information could guide educational institutions in aligning competency programs with actual labor-market needs, Yassierli said.

"In the future, we could develop a critical occupation list to identify roles that will be essential going forward. Educational institutions are certainly waiting for this information," he added.

Yassierli said validating foreign-worker employment involves more than administrative procedures and requires assessing job roles, qualifications, counterpart staff, and skills and technology transfers.

"Details regarding job roles, qualifications, counterpart staff, and the transfer of skills and technology must be considered to ensure that employing foreign workers adds value to the capacity building of the Indonesian workforce," he said.

He also stressed coordination between central and regional governments, saying accurate foreign-worker data would complement the national labor-demand picture and support evidence-based manpower policies.
