Indian women’s kabaddi team captain Pushpa Rana targets Asian Games gold

Himachal Pradesh player Pushpa Rana has been named captain of the Indian women’s kabaddi team, with the experienced campaigner setting her sights on leading the country to a gold medal at the upcoming Asian Games.

Rana said being entrusted with the captaincy was a matter of immense pride but also came with significant responsibility, as the team prepares to live up to the expectations of winning a medal for the country.

“I am thankful to all the office-bearers and members of the AKFI for giving me this responsibility. It is a proud moment for me, but at the same time, it is a big responsibility. The expectations of the country are associated with the team and we will work hard to live up to them,” Rana said.

“Our target is to win a gold medal for India.”

Rana received a warm welcome on her arrival at Kangra airport, with celebrations breaking out in her hometown and family after her appointment as captain.

She said her parents had always dreamt of seeing her lead the Indian team and were delighted that their wish had finally been fulfilled.

“My parents always wanted to see me captain the Indian team. They are extremely happy that their dream has come true,” she said.

Rana is no stranger to international competition, having represented India at the South Asian Games, Asian Championships, Asian Games and the World Cup.

The Indian team has been undergoing rigorous preparations in a national camp for the last five to six months, with the players working extensively on fitness, skills, technique and handling pressure situations.

“We have been working very hard in the camp for the last five to six months. We focus on fitness in the morning and work on skills and technique later. We are also preparing ourselves to handle the pressure of matches,” she said.

Rana said India would face stiff competition from teams such as Iran and Chinese Taipei and stressed that the side could not afford to take any opponent lightly.

“Iran and Chinese Taipei are strong teams. At the international level, you cannot take any team lightly. Our coaching staff has worked individually with every player and we are preparing ourselves to give our best at the Asian Games,” she added.

Rana also said she was yet to receive any congratulatory message from the Himachal Pradesh government or Chief Minister following her appointment.

She, however, expressed hope that the state government would extend its encouragement and wishes before the Indian team leaves for the tournament.

“I have not received any call or message from the Himachal Pradesh government or the Chief Minister yet. Hopefully, we will receive their encouragement and best wishes before the team leaves,” she said.
