The wounds on P.T., otherwise known as Silent Hills, still haven't healed. What started as a monumental project eventually came to a head in 2015, when collaborator and film legend Guillermo del Toro announced that Silent Hills had been canceled.

What happened afterward can only be described as a fever dream, as legendary developer Hideo Kojima left the company entirely following Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. For fans, that wasn't the worst of it. Silent Hills wasn't just canceled; it was practically erased from history.

P.T., also known as the "playable teaser" of Silent Hills, was pulled from the PlayStation Network, and effectively killed on PS4, even in demo form. Now, thanks to a discovery on X, it's fully playable on PC [via Tweaktown].

Creator LoreanXavier crafted a PC port of P.T., and it's fully playable again, using assets from the PS4 edition. Fans have already poured through the port and mined it into oblivion, giving it a thumbs up as one of the most accurate recreations of the original P.T. in years. You can also utilize the following modern enhancements:

  • NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 3.1
  • Native-resolution DLAA
  • FSR Native AA

There are also multiple graphical presets for this PC edition, with the option to recreate the original PS4 experience as much as possible. However, it also includes modern bonuses like ray tracing and enhanced textures. Surprisingly, it also adds new concepts, like a free camera, a museum, New Game+, a photo mode, and a speedrunning timer.

It's impressive how this all came to be, but preservation is one of the most important elements of this game, given the unfortunate circumstances surrounding its removal from the PSN.

As for AI use, LoreanXavier says that it was reserved for debugging. In his own words: "I use AI for debugging when I get stuck. This project is built on years of experience with P.T. and Fox Engine; I was making shadPS4/ModDB workarounds for the game long before this port. That knowledge makes reverse engineering easier. I’m not blindly vibe-coding a P.T. port."

Fans are already loving the playable edition of P.T., especially since it had such a massive and passionate fanbase. The game even caught Kojima's eye, and he reposted the PC port on X. As one writes on X: "Dude wants to see his game preserved more than anyone. The amount of PT screenshots and retrospective articles he retweets just show how important that game is to him."

If you're a fan of what Silent Hills could have become, or what P.T. was, you should check out this PC project. If you've never played P.T. at all before, you're in for a treat.
