Magic Knight Rayearth centers on three high school girls named Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. On a class field trip to Tokyo Tower, they are magically transported into the fantasy world of Cefiro. They are immediately greeted by the mage Clef, who tells them that the world is dying after the priest Zagato kidnapped Princess Emeraude, whose prayers maintain the state of the world. Without her singing, Cefiro is on the brink of collapse. Imbued with magical powers as the Magic Knights, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu must learn how to work together to survive and save Cefiro.
The creative circle CLAMP serialized the Magic Knight Rayearth manga in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine from 1993 to 1996 with six volumes. The manga inspired two television anime seasons, the first running from October 1994 to March 1995, and the second season, titled Magic Knight Rayearth 2, running from April to November 1995. The manga also inspired a three-episode 1997 original video anime project simply titled Rayearth, featuring an alternate retelling of the story.

Yen Press is releasing the novels in English, and it describes the story:
Even though Sasaki's droll corporate life is constantly filled with work, it leaves him tired and unfulfilled at the end of every day. In search of some companionship to fill the emptiness in his life, he visits a pet shop on a whim, not realizing he's about to change his life forever. After settling on an adorable bird and bringing it home...his new roommate reveals that it's actually an incredible sage from another world who promptly bestows Sasaki with supernatural powers as well as the ability to cross between worlds. All Sasaki wants to do is use these newfound powers to live in peace and comfort, but there are more than a few colorful characters who might get in the way of that...
Kadokawa began publishing the novel series in January 2021 with illustrations by Kantoku, and the novels are ongoing. The novels won the Tankōbon and the Novel categories of the 2022 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel Is Amazing!) guidebook. The 13th novel volume shipped on March 25.
