John Cena doesn't spend much time on Halloween costumes, because when October rolls around he just goes as himself. The WWE legend told The Romesh Ranganathan Show that his usual wrestling gear doubles as his emergency option, so he never has to get creative. Dressing up isn't his strength, he admitted, but he makes up for it at the front door by handing out oversized candy to trick-or-treaters in his neighborhood. Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31 this year.

John Cena Uses His Familiar WWE Gear When He Needs a Last-Minute Halloween Costume

The outfit is the same look Cena wore through much of his career: jorts, knee pads, sneakers, a baseball cap, a T-shirt, double wristbands and the rally towel.

He retired from the ring after losing to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13, 2025, so the getup is a bit of a throwback now. Cena says he can pull it together without any shopping.

“It's a one-to-one replica. So that's like if I need an emergency costume,” he explained.

He also described it as “failsafe” and “a crutch for not being motivated to dress up,” which suggests the effort is the issue and not the holiday itself. And it's not like he's never gone all out.

In 2015, he and Nikki Bella showed up as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne from Dumb & Dumber.

The WWE Legend Makes Up for His Costume Choices by Giving Kids King-Size Candy

His neighbors get the better end of the deal anyway. Cena calls his place the “king candy house,” and he skips the regular small treats in favor of oversized ones. In his words, “Screw the full-size ones. I get the ones that is like, ‘This is diabetes in a wrapper. Here, take this."

The habit goes back to his own childhood. He remembers exactly which house in his neighborhood gave out full-size candy bars, and that was the one worth a stop.

Now his block has picked up new families with kids, which means more trick-or-treaters at his door.

His wife first thought he was handing out too much, but Cena didn't agree. “So we give king-size of everything, like oversized everything, and everyone is quite excited,” he said.

Cena has had a busy October otherwise, with Matchbox: The Movie premiering on October 5 and arriving on Apple TV on October 9. He plays undercover CIA agent Sean Walker in it.

His next WWE date comes two days after Halloween, when he returns to Raw on Monday, November 2, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. That show has an early 6 p.m. ET start, since WWE is also taping SmackDown at the arena the same night.
