Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for Crystal Lake!
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane smartly wrote Crystal Lake season 1 so it could stand alone if it were canceled, but these seven lingering questions open the door for season 2. Peacock has brought the Friday the 13th franchise back after 17 years with a reimagined prequel focused on Pamela Voorhees, the original killer, nine months after the supposed drowning of Jason. The show packs a lot into eight episodes, including an origin story, a murder investigation, an investigation into Bellflower, and Pamela’s psychological breakdown. Plus, Pamela brutally kills ten people in Crystal Lake, adding plenty of intense gore into the mix.
Luckily, Kane went into Crystal Lake preparing for potential cancellation, which is refreshing in a streaming landscape that pulls the plug on shows too soon. As such, the first season can stand on its own. Pamela and Jason get reunited. Elias is murdered. We know Jason Voorhees survived the lake drowning and how he became fully grown by the second movie. That doesn’t mean that every question is answered, though. The end of Crystal Lake season 1 keeps enough questions unanswered that it can continue if Peacock renews the show for season 2.
What Happens To Chief LeVon Brooks?
While Pamela Voorhees is the main character of Crystal Lake, Chief LeVon “Lee” Brooks plays a significant role as his love interest and an investigator looking into Bellflower. He has been Pamela’s biggest supporter, even when he had evidence of her being a murderer. Then, he was shot at the end of Crystal Lake season 1. While Dorf tends to his potentially fatal injury, they neither confirm nor deny whether Lee survived. With him playing such a significant role, Crystal Lake needs to clarify whether Lee is still alive.
If he's alive, that opens a whole other set of questions. He will either have to reveal Pam’s crimes or cover up another group of murders. Thanks to his sister, he has a lot of evidence against Bellflower, and he doesn’t seem the type to let go. Ultimately, Lee’s survival or death will heavily shape season 2.
Will Bellflower Continue Pursuing Pamela & Jason Voorhees?
Jason survived the camp drowning and can endure severe injuries because Project Argonaut genetically engineered him with cockroach DNA when he was a baby and a young child. Jason’s Subject J. He’s the only success story. The automatic assumption is that Elias Wittering’s murder ends Bellflower’s story, but he was far from the only participant. Businesspeople and scientists played a part. Plus, Project Argonaut operated under the Bellflower umbrella, and I wouldn’t put it past them to torture him again. After Crystal Lake season 1, it’ll be pretty easy for them to find him.
Question 1 of 3
Elias is too smart to have gone to Crystal Lake without telling anyone. Even if he did, two individuals from Bellflower have already been found dead in the town. Now, many more dead employees are going to pop up. At some point, they’ll connect the dots, so Pamela and Jason Voorhees might not be completely in the clear just yet.
What Happens to Grace Snell After She Leaves the Hospital?
Grace Snell is the only kind friend that Jason Voorhees has, and she plays a significant role in about half the TV show. They even, divisively, rewrote Friday the 13th’s opening scene by having her stab Barry and Claudette while on an LSD-induced drug trip. However, after she goes into the hospital, Crystal Lake seems to just forget about her existence. As such, a second season would need to answer what happened to her.
She's lying about what happened to Barry and Claudette, but children tend to be bad liars. She could incriminate herself by telling the truth. Even if she gets off scot-free, her mom is deep-fried dead. The only person helping her throughout the season is Pamela, who has promised to take care of her. However, Pamela has a deeply disturbing, boundaryless maternal obsession with Grace, though. So, Crystal Lake could be setting her up as a third Friday the 13th killer. (Yes, I'm intentionally ignoring the fifth movie's existence.) Alternately, she could easily leave town with a family member.
Where Is The Missing Hippie, Harmony?
One of the oddest subplots in Crystal Lake is the group of hippies who show up in town, help get the camp up and running, and then get slaughtered by Pamela. The hippie murder is a major lore change, as the Friday the 13th movies never mention any larger massacre on the day of Barry and Claudette’s murders. Since the storyline is original to the TV show, we don’t actually know how it’s going to wrap up, but they need to give us something.
The end of Crystal Lake season 1 makes a point of confirming that police cannot track down Harmony, the only survivor of the murder spree. She’s the prime suspect, though townsfolk already question if she would be capable of committing all those murders. Crystal Lake season 2 needs to answer where she is and whether she’ll come back. If she does return to the town, she can implicate Pamela and Grace.
Who Knows That Jason Is Alive?
When speaking with Gold Derby, Kane said one topic he wanted to dive into in Crystal Lake season 2 is whether folks know Jason’s in the woods. This suggests more people may know that it seems. Obviously, Pamela knows that her son is alive. Ralph tried to shoot him, so he knows the monstrous masked killer is in the woods. Grace is a bit of a wildcard because she saw a person while on drugs, but she may not know it’s Jason or believe her memories.
Lee and his sister Briana may suspect that Jason’s alive after seeing the file, if it included information about Jason as well as information on Pamela. They don’t have confirmation, though that could change in Crystal Lake season 2. It would be great to get some confirmation on Grace, Lee, and Briana. Plus, a second season could confirm if anyone else saw Jason in the woods, like the teens or Steve Christy.
How Do Pamela & Jason Survive In The Woods?
While Crystal Lake doesn’t fully match Friday the 13th, Brad Caleb Kane made it clear that the story is working towards the events of the movies. It’s why Jason doesn’t have his hockey mask yet, which he doesn’t obtain until Friday the 13th Part III. It’s why Jason couldn’t kill Pamela in the woods at the end of Crystal Lake season 1. With this in mind, we need to know how the mother-son duo survives until the Friday the 13th movie.
Pamela implies they’ll continue living in the woods. She shouts at Ralph, "You better stay away. Stay away from the lake. Or the camp. These woods are ours now!" This implies that they're going to continue living in the woods, but they will need food, shelter, and something to make a fire. Pamela may not be able to go back and forth from town, considering how many dead bodies she has been connected to. As such, they may need someone to help them out, which could be a storyline for season 2.
Will Jason Massacre The Camp Counselors Around The Bonfire?
At the end of Crystal Lake season 1, Steve Christy and a group of counselors sit in the woods around a bonfire. As he tells them the story of Jason’s death and the haunted woods, Jason watches them from a distance. Pamela says that the woods, lake, and camp are theirs now. So, in the minds of the killers, those teens are trespassing. As such, it’s reasonable to question whether that group will get murdered.
Every slasher fan will know that the technical elements in the scene frequently occur leading up to a murder sequence. Plus, Crystal Lake proves that it’s willing to play with continuity. The hippie massacre didn’t happen in the original story, and Grace didn’t kill the two camp counselors. In fact, Grace didn’t even exist. As such, it doesn’t seem outlandish for Crystal Lake to add in another pre-Friday the 13th massacre.
