SINGAPORE, Nov 7 — A man was arrested on early Saturday (November 7) morning after a police pursuit in Little India ended with his car crashing into another before overturning at a road junction.

Police said in a news release the same morning that the 33-year-old man will be charged with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means and failure to provide a specimen of breath.

According to the police, he had allegedly assaulted a 34-year-old man with a sharp object along River Valley Road at about 8.35pm on Friday.

Police pursuit leads to car overturning

The victim was taken conscious to the hospital and the man was said to have fled in his vehicle after the assault.

His vehicle was spotted by officers on patrol along Tessensohn Road at about 12.05am and they signalled it to stop.

Instead of complying, the man allegedly sped off and officers pursued the vehicle.

A video seen by AsiaOne shows the BMW sports utility vehicle (SUV) driving through the junction of Race Course Road and Birch Road, crashing into a white private-hire vehicle (PHV).

The impact sends the BMW SUV overturning and landing on the road divider.

When AsiaOne reached the scene at about 12.50am, at least two Traffic Police (TP) expressway patrol cars, two TP patrol motorcycles, four ambulances and seven police fast response cars were at the scene.

Police officers cordoned off most of the junction to facilitate medical treatment by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics and scene investigation.

The front left passenger cabin area of the BMW SUV was significantly damaged from the impact with the PHV, while the latter’s front left bumper was partially dislodged.

In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the police and SCDF stated that the 36-year-old PHV driver and his two female passengers, aged between 29 and 42, were taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken conscious to Changi General Hospital.

Alcohol, sharp objects found

After the victims were taken to hospitals, a tow truck was brought in to right the overturned SUV.

Police officers then spent over 30 minutes searching the vehicle.

AsiaOne observed at least six cans of beer and a bottle of vodka being removed from the car.

At least four sharp objects, including a pair of scissors, a penknife and what appears to be two letter opener knives were also found by officers and laid out on the ground for documentation.

The 33-year-old will be charged in court on Saturday morning with the offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means under the Penal Code, and failure to provide specimen of breath under the Road Traffic Act.

The police said in the news release that they have zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.

They also reminded motorists to comply with lawful instructions from police officers and abide by traffic rules to keep the roads safe for everyone. — AsiaOne
