Sean Monahan Injury Update: Columbus Blue Jackets Lose Key Forward After Painful Shot Block

Columbus Blue Jackets centre Sean Monahan exited Friday night's road contest against the Buffalo Sabres with a lower-body injury and did not return. The injury came late in the second period when Monahan blocked a shot, and he limped down the tunnel before being officially ruled out as the third period got underway. The Sabres went on to win 5-2. It was a rough night for Columbus on multiple fronts. The Blue Jackets also lost forward Dmitri Voronkov to an injury in the same game, leaving the team to absorb two blows in one outing.

Monahan's Night Ends After Shot Block in Second Period

Monahan had logged 11:06 of ice time and picked up an assist on the Blue Jackets' only goal of the game before he was forced off. He also had one shot on goal, three blocked shots and spent 1:33 on the power play. There was no shortage of effort from him. The fact that the injury came from a blocked shot makes it hurt a bit more, the kind of moment where a player does exactly what coaches ask and pays for it.

The 32-year-old has one goal and five assists for six points in 15 games this season, his third in Columbus. Those numbers aren't flashy, but Monahan's value in the Blue Jackets' system extends beyond the scoresheet. He brings structure to the top six, wins important faceoffs, and quarterbacks a power play that Columbus genuinely needs to click as the season progresses. Losing him, even for a few days, disrupts a lineup that is already thin on experienced centre depth.

The severity of the injury wasn't immediately disclosed, which is fairly standard procedure in the NHL. But the fact that he couldn't return for the third period and was ruled out before it even started suggests the team wasn't taking any chances.

Columbus Already Playing Catch-Up on the Season

The Blue Jackets are next scheduled to play at home on Tuesday against the Florida Panthers. That gives medical staff a few days to assess how serious this lower-body issue actually is. Whether Monahan makes that game is the immediate question hanging over the organisation.

Monahan's durability has always been a talking point. After a season-ending groin injury during the 2022-23 season, it seemed his availability had improved significantly, and he had rewarded that optimism over stretches in Columbus. But a look at his recent history tells a familiar story, with lower-body issues showing up multiple times across his career. This latest setback fits an unfortunate pattern, even if it's too early to know the extent of the damage.

For a Blue Jackets squad still trying to establish its identity in the standings, losing a veteran presence in Monahan and dealing with the Voronkov injury in the same game is not how you want a road trip to end. The 5-2 final score was bad enough. The injury list makes it worse.
