VP Gibran visits flash flood victims, pledges swift recovery in Solok

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka visited flash-flood evacuees in Solok, West Sumatra, on Friday to assess their needs and the government's emergency response and recovery efforts.

Gibran said the central and regional governments and other agencies were coordinating to ensure the emergency response and recovery efforts proceeded effectively, according to a statement received Friday.

“I understand this situation is difficult for all of you. The central government, together with the regional government, will continue to coordinate to carry out emergency response measures and ensure the post-disaster recovery process runs optimally,” Gibran said.

He said emergency response efforts must prioritize safety and meeting residents' urgent needs.

Gibran highlighted damage to homes, farmland and livestock and called for residents' losses to be recorded promptly to speed up and better target recovery efforts.

“Data collection is currently underway on damaged homes and farmland belonging to residents. Please report to officers in the field regarding homes, farmland, and livestock affected by the disaster. The government will ensure compensation and recovery,” Gibran said.

After a resident said their home was no longer habitable, Gibran assured them that officials would collect data and arrange reconstruction for affected residents.

Gibran also stressed the need to replace residents' identity documents that were lost or damaged in the disaster.

He asked regional governments to coordinate the reissuance of family cards, identity cards and other administrative documents to ensure displaced residents could promptly access basic services.

The flash flood, triggered by heavy rain, hit the Arosuka area on Monday night, Sept. 21, killing two people, according to earlier reports.

Gibran's visit aimed to ensure a swift, coordinated response based on residents' needs, particularly those of pregnant women, older people, people with disabilities and children.
