We wore Falcons’ kits at 2008 Olympics — Osaze

Former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie has revealed how administrative miscalculations at the 2008 Beijing Olympics forced Nigeria’s U-23 football team into an embarrassing and hilarious kit crisis.

Speaking during a chat with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade, the former West Bromwich Albion star walked down memory lane to recount how Samson Siasia’s squad outlasted everyone’s expectations and their own luggage.

According to Odemwingie, federation officials seemingly booked the team’s ticket home before a ball was even kicked. Convinced the side would suffer an early tournament exit, delegation members shipped the players’ primary apparel back to Nigeria.

Instead, the Super Eagles flew past the group stage and marched deep into the competition, leaving the players scrambling for matchday gear.

The logistical blunder reached a comical low when the team had to raid the women’s team’s luggage department just to outfit the players for the knockout rounds.

 “At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie recalled.

“Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits.”

The makeshift wardrobe did not go unnoticed by opposing teams. Odemwingie shared that players from the United States squad openly teased the Nigerians about cycling through the exact same attire match after match. With few alternatives left, some players resorted to buying plain white T-shirts off-the-rack to mix things up.

“Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us.

“Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts.”

The improvised style didn’t slow the team down. Nigeria powered all the way to the gold medal match, ultimately settling for a proud silver after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Argentina courtesy of an Ángel Di María strike.

While the Beijing campaign is widely celebrated for its podium finish, Odemwingie’s interaction with Ajibade highlights a lighter, chaotic side of tournament football where administrative oversight met elite player resilience.
