Yusril asserts solid sectoral alignment across legal ministries

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Inter-agency coordination across Indonesia’s legal, human rights and correctional sectors remains steady following a two-year operational tenure under Prabowo Subianto–Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration, according to Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, Yusril noted that the three technical ministries—the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Human Rights as well as the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs—have achieved significant progress despite occasional operational friction.

"At times, issues arise in the field—as is common—where sectoral interests lead to a sense of 'this falls under my authority,'" Yusril said, emphasizing that his role focuses on facilitating high-level inter-agency cooperation rather than micromanaging technical details to ensure smooth public service delivery.

To further align policies and address operational bottlenecks, Yusril announced plans to convene a high-level coordination meeting with the technical ministers under his supervision in the near future.

Addressing key priorities, the coordinating minister highlighted the urgent need to reform the country's overburdened penal system—citing complex structural challenges involving multiple external stakeholders, including the Attorney General's Office, judicial authorities, human rights bodies and educational institutions.

Highlighting the scope of the crisis, Yusril revealed that nearly 60 percent of Indonesia's current prison population is incarcerated on narcotics-related charges.

"A comprehensive overhaul and internal improvements are urgently required," he stated.

He further noted that rising crime rates remain closely tied to broader socioeconomic conditions, asserting that expanding prison infrastructure alone will fail to resolve overcrowding unless fundamental public welfare issues are addressed.
