PUTRAJAYA, Oct 13 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is examining a viral video alleged to contain false and misleading information regarding the Sales and Service Tax (SST) and income tax relief in the 2027 Budget.

The MCMC said it has received public complaints regarding the video, which has been circulating on social media.

According to the statement, the dissemination of such information could cause confusion regarding national taxation policies, trigger unfounded concerns, and influence the public’s financial decisions based on incorrect information.

“In this regard, MCMC has referred the matter to the Ministry of Finance and is currently assessing the video’s content, including the context of its dissemination and its potential impact on the public.

“Further action will be considered if there are violations of prevailing laws, including Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588],” the statement read.

The MCMC also emphasised that freedom of speech must be exercised responsibly and should not be abused to spread false information that could harm the public interest.

Meanwhile, the public is urged to verify information related to the 2027 Budget through the Ministry of Finance’s official portal at www.belanjawan.mof.gov.my, the Sebenarnya.my portal, the AIFA chatbot via WhatsApp at 03-8688 7997, and the official channels of relevant authorities before believing or sharing such information. — Bernama
