The latest adaptation of a 143-year-old classic is sailing off to an inauspicious start.
The adaptation is the new MGM+ drama Treasure Island, a reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic. In particular, it centers on a young Jim Hawkins and his mother, Beth, just as they come to take hold of Captain Flint’s legendary treasure map. As a result, they are soon caught in a dangerous race to obtain a bevy of riches.
The cast is filled with familiar faces, including Silo star David Oyelowo as Long John Silver, MCU vet Hayley Atwell as Bess Hawkins, Great Expectations actor Tom Sweet as Jim Hawkins, Boardwalk Empire alum Jack Huston as Aaron Graham, and Tomer Capone of The Boys as Billy Bones.
Treasure Island is off to a record-breaking start on Rotten Tomatoes, though not in a good way. It's currently at 14% based on 7 reviews, with only one categorized as positive. That makes it one of the lowest-rated scripted series of 2026, just behind Netflix's animated original Alley Cats, voiced by Ricky Gervais, which is at 20%. It's also the lowest-rated show for Atwell and Oyelowo.
