Stop-work order issued after worker killed in Jelutong construction site

GEORGE TOWN: A stop-work order was issued after a Myanmar worker was killed when a steel box section collapsed at a construction site in Jelutong on Monday.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang said the order was issued to halt all related work following the incident.

It also issued an order to preserve the site to facilitate investigations into the fatal accident.

"Preliminary investigations conducted yesterday found that the victim was carrying out dismantling and installation work involving a steel box section (cantilever) when the structure collapsed.

"Further investigations are underway, with the employer and witnesses being called to provide information and statements," it said.

DOSH Penang said the case is being investigated under Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, as well as relevant occupational safety and health regulations.

Section 15 requires employers to ensure workplace safety.

According to DOSH Penang, employers are responsible for ensuring the safety, health and welfare of workers, as well as the safety of members of the public at the workplace.

"Appropriate action will be taken if investigations find any breaches of occupational safety and health laws," it added.
