Athletics SA calls for action after Elizabeth Moselakgomo’s death

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has called for safer spaces for women following the death of Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Mokolo Moselakgomo.

Moselakgomo, 38, disappeared after leaving home for an afternoon run. Her family later positively identified her body.

ASA said her death had highlighted the dangers women face while doing something as ordinary as exercising.

“The circumstances surrounding Elizabeth’s death are deeply distressing and highlight the vulnerability of women who should be able to participate in sport and exercise without fear for their safety,” ASA said.

‘Deeply saddened’

ASA Acting CEO Terrence Magogodela said Moselakgomo’s death had hit the athletics community hard.

“As an athletics family, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Elizabeth,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those affected by this tragedy.”

Magogodela said ASA trusted investigators to establish what happened and bring those responsible to justice.

‘Run, walk and participate in sport in safety’

ASA said it stood with women and communities affected by violence.

The federation called for continued efforts to ensure people can “run, walk and participate in sport in safety and dignity”.

It also extended its condolences to Moselakgomo’s daughter, relatives and friends.

Her death has now put the safety of women runners firmly back in focus, with ASA insisting that women should not have to fear for their lives while exercising.
