Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos, will mark its 99th Founders’ Day today (Saturday), formally beginning the countdown to its centenary in October 2027.

The event will hold on the school premises on a low-key scale, while efforts gather momentum to mobilise old students, parents, teachers, corporate organisations, government, and philanthropists ahead of the 100th anniversary.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the newly elected Parent-Teacher Association Chairperson, Banke Apata, the centenary offers an opportunity to celebrate the school’s history and strengthen its foundation for the future.

She said her administration would prioritise academic excellence, discipline, and student welfare, while promoting closer collaboration among parents, teachers, and school management.

“Academic excellence is very important, but we also want to raise young women of character, discipline, confidence, and integrity.

“Our children must leave Queen’s College equipped not only to succeed academically but also to become responsible women and leaders who can contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.

She urged old students, parents, corporate organisations, and well-wishers to contribute their expertise, resources, networks, and goodwill to projects that will deliver lasting benefits to the school.

Apata added that the anniversary should also document the contributions of generations of former students.

“Every Queen has a story, and every Queen is part of the Queen’s College story.

“We want to bring that community together, making October 2027 a celebration of where we have come from, and a declaration of what we want Queen’s College to become in the next 100 years,” she said.

She congratulated the school on the milestone, describing the 99th Founders’ Day as a significant step towards its centenary.

The Director-Principal, Dr Oyindamola Obabori, stated that the school remains committed to its traditions of academic excellence, character formation, and leadership development as it approaches its 100th anniversary.

“As we approach 100 years, we are conscious of the great legacy that has been entrusted to us.

“Our responsibility is not only to celebrate our past, but to ensure that we continue to equip our girls with the knowledge, character, resilience, and leadership qualities they need to thrive in the future,” she said.
