Mutant Mayhem’s Future After 2027 Sequel Gets Shocking Update In New TMNT Report

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 comes out in 2027, but the film series’ future beyond is reportedly not as clear-cut anymore.

In 2023, Mutant Mayhem, the first theatrically-released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie since 2007’s TMNT, arrived in theaters. Placing a greater emphasis on the teenage aspects of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, this coming-of-age movie was both a critical and commercial success. Yet, even before Mutant Mayhem’s release, Paramount Pictures had already greenlighted Mutant Mayhem 2 a month beforehand. Mutant Mayhem 3, on the other hand, might face a more uphill battle to be made.

In a new report from The Wrap, it’s mentioned that if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel is a “runaway success, there will certainly be more in that world.” However, the publication also points out how Paramount Pictures tapped Sonic the Hedgehog producer Neal H. Moritz to carry out those same duties on a live-action Ninja Turtles reboot. This project’s development might “edge out the animated features” from the TMNT franchise.

The Mutant Mayhem continuity also encompasses the TV show Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which premiered on Paramount+ in August 2024. However, the series ended in December 2025 after 24 episodes across two seasons, with The Wrap noting that this cleared “the way for its potential removal from the sacred timeline.” The short film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey was attached to the theatrical release of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants last December, and can now also be found on Paramount+.

If this report is accurate, then Mutant Mayhem 2’s performance in a little under a year will dictate whether the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series continues on two fronts, or if Paramount will solely focus on live-action output again. On the critical front, Mutant Mayhem ranks at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes’ professional review-driven Tomatometer, while the audience-driven Popcornmeter rests at 90%. ScreenRant’s review of Mutant Mayhem rated it seven out of 10 stars, saying that the movie boasts “an excellent voice cast, stylish animation that stands out, and a fun, decent story.”

No specific plot details for Mutant Mayhem 2 have been revealed yet aside from the fact that it will feature the Shredder, who was set up as the next villain at the end of the previous movie. Nicolas Cantu, Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., and Brady Noon reprise Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, respectively. Director Jeff Rowe also reprises his helming duties for the sequel.

As far as the next live-action Ninja Turtles movie goes, it’s unclear if it will use the same script that Colin Jost and Casey Jost were writing in 2021, or if new writers have been hired. This will be the first live-action TMNT movie since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. There was also an R-rated film adaptation of the comic book miniseries Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin announced in 2024, but it was later scrapped.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 will be released in theaters on August 13, 2027. The live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is slated for November 17, 2028.
